Open Letter to Senator Boxer Regarding Health Care

Mike Copass
Chair, Progressive Democrats of America – Metro San Diego
San Diego, CA 92111

July 9th, 2009

Dear Senator Boxer,

Progressive Democrats of America Metro San Diego Chapter is grateful for your years of exceptional service and leadership in the U.S. Senate. Our PDA motto is “Healthcare not Warfare” – and today we are calling on you to show leadership in co-sponsoring legislation which would create a system of universal health care through a publicly-funded, privately delivered system – or “Enhanced Medicare for All.” The legislation we ask you to co-sponsor was introduced by Sen. Bernie Sanders in Senate Bill 703, a companion bill to Congressman John Conyer’s bill H.R. 676 now in the House, which has 83 cosponsors.

We believe that healthcare is a human right, and that advocating for a publicly-financed, privately-delivered health care system that brings everybody in, and leaves no one out, is the best way to arrive at the fulfillment of that right. This movement has widespread support and is growing. In fact, the California Democratic Party voted to approve a resolution in support of single-payer national healthcare system at its annual Convention, quoted briefly:

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the California Democratic Party supports the establishment of a universal, single-payer, national health care system in the United States. (SAC09.29)

Today we are assembled at your offices, not just in San Diego, but across California to ask for your leadership in answering the call that the California Democratic Party and so many others have made. Please co-sponsor S. 703 today. We look forward to working with you on this issue.

Sincerely,

Mike Copass
Progressive Democrats of America Metro San Diego
